COLIMA, Mexico, June 29, 2007.- Cindy Rondon and Milagros Cabral
combined for 38 points carrying the Dominican Republic to a third
place finish at the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup.
Rondon had 20 points and Cabral added 18 in the 25-19, 26-28,
25-18, 28-26 victory over the USA. Bethania de la Cruz had 16 and
Annerys Vargas and Cosiris Rodriguez contributed 11 and 9 points
respectively.
American Katherine Wilkins led all the players with 21 points and
Jennifer Joines, Cynthia Barboza and Cassandra Busse had 13, 11
and 10.
“I am very satisfied with this victory and the continued growth of
our project,” said Miguel Beato Cruz, the Dominican coach. “In the
history of the Pan American Cup we have three second places and
three third places, so I thanks to the Lord for being again on the
podium.”
“The key today was our attack because we did not block well and
the quality of our serves descended after the first set,” he
added.”
Cosiris Rodriguez, the Dominican captain, said: “We met the
challenge of qualifying to the Grand Prix of next year and also
about finishing among the top three teams. But that said, I think
we have to continue trying to refine our game.”
Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, the American captain, said: “I liked the
fighting spirit of our team. It was a good match and unfortunately
we couldn’t win the fourth set. Four our younger players, it has
been a good experience to compete at the international level which
is different than the college ranks.”.
